Does the good outweigh the bad?

Many view illegal immigration in a derogatory way. Maybe you're one of those people who complain about all the immigrants in you area and think that they come to the United States and "live for free". While illegal immigrants do have a negative impact on our economy, they also benefit US citizens in many ways. Below are a list of pros and cons associated with illegal immigrants taken from http://www.articler.com/10519/Illegal-Immigration-Pros-And-Cons.html. Do they pros out weigh the cons? Feel free to comment and leave your opinions.

Pros Of Illegal Immigration:
1. It helps keep the economy moving by filling low-wage jobs.
2. It provides a better lifestyle for those who enter the country illegally.
3. It creates a pool of consumers for a variety of goods and services.
4. Farmers are able to plant and harvest less expensively.
5. Contributions to social security funds often go unclaimed.
6. Illegal immigrants pay sales taxes.
7. Illegal residents, who are property owners, also pay real estate taxes.
8. Millions of illegals rent properties in depressed areas where renters are hard to find.
9. They purchase real estate and generate commissions for agents and brokers.
10. Illegal immigrants contribute to mortgage loan profits.
11. They open bank accounts that yield interest and dividends to bankers.
12. Many purchase auto insurance and contribute to insurers profits margins.

Cons Of Illegal Immigration:
1. Burden on tax-based resources, costing taxpayers billions of dollars.
2. Difficult prosecution and justice when perpetrators flee the country.
3. Disparity between legal immigrants who follow the rules and those who don't.
4. They risk death when traveling the desert to reach the borders.
5. Those who successfully cross the border inspire those left behind to do the same.
6. Continued growth of the demand for cheap labor and low wages.
7. No government reimbursement to offset states' illegal alien maintenance costs.
8. Potential negative effects on working and middle-class citizens.
9. Millions of U.S. dollars remitted to Mexico
10. Mortgage loan fraud
11. Fake document mills
12. Imbalance in authorized immigration quotas

What are your views on legal immigration? Do you think it has the same effect on America as illegal immigration does? Instead of hurting our own economy and the working class, why don't we give federal grants to these countries? It would help boost their economy and keep their citizens in their country so that they can contribute to bringing their country out of poverty. If everyone is leaving, of course matters can only get worse back home for everyone else. Do you think as a superpower we are obligated to help out countries in poverty who need our help?

I think that the pros far outweigh the cons. Furthermore, I think the second pro outweighs all the cons put together. “It provides a better lifestyle for those who enter the country illegally.” I think we should treat the immigrants as neighbors instead of aliens. They risk their lives to make a better life for their families. Most of them would rather stay in their own country with their families but the country does not have enough resources for them to survive if they do stay there. For many coming to the United States is their last resort and if they are not given a permit to come legally, they must come illegally because they have no other choice. I think there is a lot more our government can do to make the list of cons a whole lot shorter. I do think we should help our country’s own poor but I also think our country has the capacity to help the unfortunate form other countries much more than they do.

Krista,
As a superpower, I do think that it is our obligation to help other countries. By aiding other countries and providing the support they need to enable their citizens to live comfortably, through the use of federal grants, we can also benefit the United States. This, in turn, will minimize the need for migration and help to stabilize the population in the United States. In a perfect world, this would be the solution. However, we have to recognize the fact that there are many countries in need that aren't able to adequately provide for it's citizens. If we start giving out federal grants, how should we decide who to give them to? We certainly don't have the resources to provide grants to all the countries that need them. In theory, giving federal grants to help stabilize poverty stricken countries seems like a great plan however, this may not be an appropriate solution.

Nicole,
You have a very valid point. I also agree that if we are able to "provide a better lifestyle" to those illegal immigrants then that is what we as a country should do. However, we have to recognize the fact that as more immigrants hear about the benefits of coming to the United States, the faster the immigrant population will grow. I think that as a superpower, the United Sates should be able to devise a plan that will create a balance between providing aid for other countries and allowing their citizens to come to the United States.
